Safety label guide

Every unit we ship uses one label system. This page explains what each label means, the US and Canada editions, and where each label goes on the switchgear. It is written for buyers checking a submittal, inspectors on site and crews who service the equipment.

Open label specifications

Four signal words

The signal word says how serious the hazard is if it is not avoided. Color and signal word always agree on the level. The symbol shows the kind of hazard.

DANGER

Will cause death or serious injury.

Example: HAZARDOUS VOLTAGE, on doors to live parts.

WARNING

Could cause death or serious injury.

Example: ARC FLASH HAZARD, on sections that may be serviced while energized.

CAUTION

Could cause minor or moderate injury.

Example: HEAVY DOOR, next to the handle.

NOTICE

For harm to the equipment, not to people. No safety alert symbol.

Example: LIFTING POINTS, at each lifting point.

Each label covers one hazard, in three lines: what it is, what it can do, how to avoid it.

US and Canada editions

One layout, two editions. Tell us the country of each site and we apply the matching edition at the factory.

US WARNING label, English only — US edition
English only. 5 × 4 in (127 × 102 mm).

Canada WARNING label, English and French — Canada edition
English on top, French below. The signal word appears in both languages: WARNING and AVERTISSEMENT, CAUTION and ATTENTION, NOTICE and AVIS. DANGER is the same in both. Same size.

Equipment for Canada carries its safety markings in English and French.

Arc flash label

NEC 110.16 requires an arc flash warning on switchgear likely to be serviced while energized. The values on our label come from the arc flash study for your site.

Example US arc flash and shock hazard label — Example label. The values shown are not from a real study. 5 × 7 in (127 × 178 mm), in a US and a Canada edition.

Incident energy: The heat energy an arc flash could deliver at the working distance, in cal/cm². Protective clothing must be rated at or above it.
Arc flash boundary: Inside this distance, an arc flash could cause a second-degree burn. Wear arc-rated PPE inside it.
Nominal voltage: The system voltage at this equipment.
Working distance: From the possible arc to the worker's face and chest.
Limited approach: Unqualified people stop here unless a qualified person goes with them.
Restricted approach: Only qualified people with shock protection go closer.
Glove class: The rubber insulating gloves to wear. Class 00 is rated up to 500 V AC.
Equipment and study: Which equipment the label belongs to, and the date of the study. A new study means a new label.

Where each label goes

Every label has a fixed place on the switchgear and a code that matches the location map.

On every door to live parts, at eye level. You can read it with the door closed.
AF1
WARNING, arc flash label, 5 × 7 in
Until the arc flash study is done, the 5 × 4 in W1 warning goes here instead. On the front of every section that may be serviced while energized.

CAUTION, heavy door
Next to the handle of each heavy door.
N1
NOTICE, lifting points
Next to each lifting point, on the top or side.
R1
Nameplate
On the front of the incoming section. The nameplate is not a safety label. It holds the ratings in one place.

Label specifications

Sizes, PANTONE colors, materials, mounting holes and the location map for every label. Labels are printed on a UL 969 label system rated for powder-coated steel.
